Perry's Victory to close for repairs August 1, 2009
Perry's Victory
and International Peace Memorial will close August 1, 2009 for two
seasons as the memorial column undergoes needed repairs to the
observation deck and column.
Blanca Alvarez Stransky, Superintendent of the National Park,
outlined plans for 2009 and beyond at a community potluck held on
November 5 at the Put-in-Bay Town Hall.
Stransky had just been notified two day prior to the event that the
procedure for Congress to release the money for the needed repair
work at Perry's Victory will delay the start date.
"I'm not happy," Stransky told the more than 100 people gathered.
"I've spent the past day on the phone looking for alternative
funding to keep the project on schedule, but as of right now it
looks like the memorial will be closed for two seasons through
2012."
With that in mind the memorial has a long list of plans for
the 2009 season, including opening early for the season in March.
Stransky said the memorial will open weekends in March and offer
special tours of the column every hour or two hours. The visitor
center will open on weekends in April until April 24 when it will
open daily.
Hours are 10-6 until Memorial day and then 10-8 from Memorial
Day through August 1. The Perry's Victory Visitor Center will be
observe the same hours and will remain open daily 10-8 through Labor
Day and will be open 10-6 after Labor Day.
Perry's Victory is coordinating Earth Day activities
with the Lake Erie Islands Chapter of the Black Swamp Conservancy on
April 25, is inviting the public to help plant a "peace garden" on
Queen Victoria weekend May 16, is hosting area families of service
men and women serving in Iraq for a "Salute to the Troops" on
Memorial Day May 23, is inviting the public to the first "Return of
the Mayfly Festival" on June 27 and is celebrating Perry's Birthday
on August 23 with games and a Perry look-a-like contest."
"I'm very excited about Perry's birthday celebration,"
Stransky said. "The Brig Niagara will be here and I cannot think of
a more fitting tribute to Perry."
The mayfly festival got a chuckle from the gathering, but
Stransky defended the idea saying a Canadian researcher has
committed to lecture on the importance of the pesky little summer
bug and that The Ohio State University was also participating and
bring microscopes for people to get a better look at the "Canadian
Soldiers."
All of these are new events at the memorial under Stransky's
program schedule which is even more impressive when one considers
Stransky has only been superintendent at the memorial for two
months.
"It is amazing the amount of work she has done and the amount
of planning for next year with so little time here," said Kendra Koehler,
a local resident who also owns the island's monthly newspaper.
The memorial will also observe Canada Day on July 1 and will
mark the 196th anniversary on the Battle of Lake Erie with
Historical Weekend, September 11-13.
Stransky, who spearheads the Put-in-Bay Bicentennial
Commission, said the committee is currently working hard on plans
for the 2013 bicentennial of the Battle of Lake Erie and was
planning to kick the celebration off in 2011.
